I write. When not writing, I’m usually talking about books, writing, and science at schools, libraries, and events. I present both in-person and through online platforms, like Zoom. I love to share the topics in my books, especially astronomy, space exploration, ecology, and other STEM/STEAM subjects. Through my business, MoonDot Media, I offer corporate training, as well as freelance writing and editing. I also provide consulting to aspiring authors.
Although I started making books at the age of nine, I wasn’t published until age 12, when I became a paid weekly newspaper columnist. Today I’m the author of more than 20 books, with translations in eight languages, a Crystal Kite Award, and other commendations.
Speaking engagements have taken me across Canada, from the east and west coasts to the Arctic, and to international locations including Australia, the USA, and South Korea. Speaking at a United Nations Environment Programme event, in Seoul, was one of many highlights.
Every writer finds a different path to publication. I teach workshops on writing, public speaking, storytelling, presenting virtually, and other topics. Those seeking publication may contact me for query letter advice and editing, as well as consulting on the process toward professional publication.
One of the hazards of being an author is the penchant to take things literally. This is why several of my book launches have involved sending a new book skyward.
So far, I’ve launched four of my astronomy titles inside rockets. My weather book—Dot to Dot in the Sky—Stories in the Clouds went up beneath a weather balloon. And Colonel Slade, an education owl, helped me launch Dark Matters—Nature’s Reaction to Light Pollution. Up next—a copy of Mortimer: Rat Race to Space will be launched in a scale model of a SpaceX Falcon.
As for the stilts, I’m claiming to be the world’s tallest author, and sometime bring my stilts to schools where I tell students how reading leads to new adventure.
SIS Canada, a British Columbia offshore school located in South Korea was fortunate to welcome Ms. Galat to present to our students during our annual summer camp. A great time was had by all as Ms. Galat taught our students about the constellations and shared many of her wonderful books. What a terrific experience it was for our students to get to meet and interact with a real Canadian author. Ms. Galat is a warm, friendly, and knowledgeable, so if you have the chance to welcome her to your school, go for it!

Having watched the aurora from space, I’ve known the unique thrill of seeing the lights swirl over the planet. Joan Marie Galat captures the science and remarkable folklore of the aurora in Stories of the Aurora, an inspirational collection of tales that makes the reader want to experience their beauty first hand.
